The Challenge of Underwater Sea Chest Isolation
Isolating sea chests for inspection, maintenance or repair of the sea chests, sea valves and sacrificial anodes, has traditionally been a high-risk operation requiring diver intervention. Divers fit sea chest blanks (if they are available) and are exposed to safety risks including getting caught or trapped in rigging, injury when working with the sea chest blanks in strong currents and in poor visibility.
Other challenges include operational / production constraints, for example when working near thrusters and in adverse metocean conditions.
This process also requires extensive logistical support, increasing operational costs and high POB (People on Board).
The Solution: ODIN® LIMPET Sea Chest Blanking
The ODIN LIMPET Sea Chest Blanking system is an innovative robotic solution designed to eliminate the need for divers to isolate sea chests.
Using remotely operated vehicle (ROV) assistance, the intelligent LIMPET Isolation Blank is installed with precision and efficiency. The ROV attaches pull-in lines to the sea chest fixings or grating, while winches on the LIMPET blank pull it towards the hull to create a secure and watertight seal. Once in place the LIMPET is held firm by the additional hydrostatic pressure created when the sea chest is emptied, thus creating an additional seal.
This fully automated approach enhances safety, reduces operational complexities, and streamlines maintenance procedures.
