CLAM™ – Innovative Robotic Cofferdam Solution for Diverless Hull Repair

The Challenge of Underwater Hull Repair

Underwater hull repair is a complex and high-risk operation that traditionally requires diver intervention. Divers face hazardous conditions, including poor visibility, strong currents, and potential entrapment.

These operations also demand significant time, logistical support, and financial resources. The need for safety compliance, additional crew, and environmental concerns further complicates the process, making hull repair a costly and labour-intensive challenge for the maritime industry.

The alternative of dry dock carries huge production penalties and logistics efforts to disconnect and reconnect the asset with the additional risk of affecting future production levels.

The Solution: ODIN® CLAM Robotic Cofferdam

The ODIN® CLAM Robotic Cofferdam revolutionises underwater hull repair by eliminating the need for divers. Using remotely operated vehicle (ROV) assistance, the robotic cofferdam is installed with precision, using laser scanning to replicate the hull profile.

The CLAM is put in place over the area to be repaired, using special ODIN access ports, installed inside the hull, through which lines are pushed outside the hull. These lines are attached to the CLAM cofferdam by ROV. The winches then pull the CLAM cofferdam against the hull and once in place, the CLAM is held firm by the additional hydrostatic pressure created when the cofferdam is emptied, thus creating an additional seal.

This diverless approach significantly improves safety, reduces operational complexity, and streamlines hull repair workflows.

The Benefits of ODIN® CLAM Robotic Cofferdam

  • Enhanced Safety: Reduces diver exposure to hazardous underwater conditions, minimising operational risks.
  • Avoid production loss: Production and operations can continue, unlike the dry dock option.
  • Cost Efficiency: Lowers overall maintenance costs by around 50%, providing significant financial savings.
  • Reduced Personnel Requirements: Cuts additional personnel on board (POB) by approximately 70% compared to diving operations.
  • Minimal Crew & Shore Involvement: Reduces reliance on vessel crew and shore personnel, streamlining logistics and reducing downtime.
  • Lower Environmental Impact: Reduces emissions and ecological footprint by reducing POB, helicopter and supply boat emissions.
