In Demystifying Digitalisation, Danny Constantinis, CEO of EM&I Group, examines digitalisation and AI in asset integrity (AI)², with the purpose of understanding its capabilities, challenges, and advantages within the industry.

Digitalisation and AI are transforming asset integrity management, especially in energy sectors like oil, gas, and renewables. These technologies provide innovative ways to monitor, verify and maintain the health of physical production assets, ensuring operational efficiency and safety.

The article highlights three key yardsticks to evaluate AI-driven asset integrity solutions:

  • Situational awareness is significantly enhanced through AI-powered remote inspection technologies such as ROVs and UAVs, reducing the need for hazardous human operations.
  • Learning, experience, and prediction play a crucial role, with AI algorithms improving surveyor training and enabling predictive maintenance by detecting defects before they become visible.
  • Commercial viability and security are essential factors, ensuring that AI implementations remain cost-effective while safeguarding against cybersecurity threats.

While digitalisation offers numerous opportunities in asset integrity, AI is not a universal solution. Its implementation must be guided by a clear understanding of its purpose to ensure meaningful and effective application.
