EM&I recognises AI and ML’s potential in AIM, using predictive analytics, real-time monitoring, computer vision and VR-based training to prevent accidents. However, integrating AI presents challenges. Over-reliance on AI may lead to employee complacency, potentially missing critical safety threats. Employee mistrust of AI could negatively impact morale and safety culture. Additionally, AI implementation would require significant investment and cybersecurity measures to prevent cyber threats.
To mitigate these risks, EM&I advocates for maintaining human oversight, fostering employee engagement in AI adoption, ensuring transparent communication, and implementing robust cybersecurity measures. The key to a strong safety culture lies in leaders taking ownership, and responsibility in uncertain situations to guide safety initiatives effectively.
While AI and ML bring significant advantages in safety and efficiency, their integration must be carefully managed to maximise benefits and minimise risks.
